"The 2008 AAA is the jewel in the crown and is named after the Marques’s three daughters, Alexandra, Tamara and Aldara. A blend of 73% Petit Verdot and 27% Graciano, it sees 30 months ageing in new French oak. It has an opulent nose of macerated dark cherries, cassis and blueberry that soars from the glass and displays fine focus and control. The palate is succulent on the entry with dark cherries, orange sorbet, blueberries and a touch of sloe with a long, harmonious finish that is satisfying, if lacking a little personality. Would it be too predictable to say that more prudent oak would have manifested a better wine? Drink 2013-2020.

Marques de Grinon is sourced from the heralded 50-hectare Dominio de Valdepusa estate that is said to have the same topsoil as Burgundy. Every top consultant seems to have consulted here since 1990, including Michel Rolland, Claude Bouguignon, Dr. Richard Smart and Emile Peynaud. However, it is Carlos Falco, the man who has been instrumental in modernizing the region’s viticulture and introducing Bordeaux varieties, who is at the heart of the estate. I found the wines to be intermittently outstanding, though to be frank, I discerned negligible differences in quality between the entry-level wines and the expensive top cuvees."
