Viticulture
The Comabruna is made from a single vineyard. We have always dreamed of having such
a vineyard with 111-year-old vines, an orientation to the east and planted on sloped, slate
soils. The Tramuntana wind touches it indirectly and the western sun caresses it lightly in
the summer thus we achieve excellent maturation without any loss of acidity. The
vineyard is all bush vines that barely rise up above the ground. They're pruned quite short
and likewise have low yields (2,500kg/ha in 2011). The grapes are harvested by hand in
boxes of 15kg and we do a pre-sorting in the vineyard.
The 2015 Vintage
2015 was a very warm year, comparable to previous vintages such as 2010 and 2003.
There was very little rainfall, a dry winter, and a spring with little rain which ended up
totaling about 100ml during the entire three months of the season. In the summer, the
rainstorms at the end of July and the more moderate temperatures in August helped to
gently slow down maturation. The harvest started on the 10th of August for our white
grapes. The Tramuntana wind had its strongest and most powerful gusts during May.
Winemaking
We did a cold soak for three days. When we started the fermentation, we made sure to
have it progress quite slowly by moderating the temperature to 28C and after we did an
extended post-fermentation maceration of 10 days. The malolactic conversion finished
down in the barrels and in total it aged 18 months in mostly used Bordeaux barrels of
500L until completed.
Type of Wine
Red wine of high structure and elegance.
Tasting Note
Ruby in color with high density and very inky. In the nose it's very complex, expressing
Mediterranean character. It holds notes of dark fruit, cedar, slate minerality and licorice
along with subtle floral aromas of violet, touches of forest floor, and notes of cocoa. On
the palate it's a wine with structure and presence, very layered, elegant and fresh while
also being mature with a persistent finish that carries the aromas and flavors wonderfully.
At the Table
We recommend to serve this wine between 15-17C in large, "Hermitage" style glasses that
permit proper aeration. To accompany… Duck confit with blueberries or orange as well as
pork flank ("secret"), shoulder, or filet.
