The 2018 Icònic is a classical Mediterranean sparkling Cava, a blend of 37% Parellada, 35% Macabeo and 28% Xarel.lo from vines over 20 years of age. It matured for no less than six years in bottle and is sold as brut nature. In reality, Icònic is the new name for their old Gran Reserva Brut Nature, which never had a proper name. It has a nuanced and elegant nose and a fresh and lightish palate. 80,000 bottles produced.
Agustí Torelló Mata finally renamed his family winery with the name of his most famous wine, Kripta, a Cava sold as a bottomless bottle that became iconic. The winery is now managed by his son and daughter Alex, the winemaker and Gemma Torelló, who left her work as lawyer to drive the family winery. They produce sparkling wines in the Cava appellation and still wines from Penedès.
They work with the grapes from 100 hectares of vines, 30 of them their property, and the rest from local growers, a total of more than 150 plots all worked organically and planted with traditional varieties, Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada and Trepat for Cava and Xarel.lo, Trepat, Xarel.lo Vermell and Garnacha for the Penedès still wines. Their Ubac estate has 20 hectares of Parellada and Trepat at 550 meters above sea level, where they have slate soils.
They vinify all the wines on their property (meaning they don't buy any base wine, a frequent thing in Cava) and produce 500,000 bottles of Cava and 120,000 of still wines. They selected their own yeasts and use them for the fermentation of all their wines.
